The foundation

Your Google profileis where people decide.

It is the first thing a customer sees, the place your reviews appear, and the number they ring. Everything else we do sits on top of it, so it is worth knowing what yours actually says.

The profile itself

Your Google profile is the panel that comes up when someone searches your business name, or searches your trade and the town they are in. It carries your name, your hours, your photos, your reviews and your phone number. Google shows it before it shows your website, and plenty of people never get as far as the website at all. They read the panel and they ring the number on it.

Most profiles are set up once and then left. The category is wrong or too vague, so Google is not clear on what you actually do. Half the work you take on is not listed anywhere. The photos are of a van you sold three years ago. Questions sit underneath unanswered, and sometimes a stranger has answered them for you. None of that looks like a crisis on its own. All of it is sitting on the thing a customer reads before deciding whether to call you.

A Google profile costs nothing to have and nothing to put right. That is why we look at it first. Before anyone spends money on a website or on getting reviews coming in, it is worth knowing what the free thing you already own is currently telling people about you.

The short list on the map

Search for a trade near you and Google puts a small map at the top, with a handful of nearby businesses listed under it. Plenty of people never scroll past that short list. They read the names, glance at the star ratings and ring one of them.

There is nothing you can buy to be on it. Google builds that list from how close you are, what your profile says you do, the reviews sitting on the profile, and whether your website tells the same story. That is why the short list is not something we sell you as a service. It is what the profile, the reviews and the website add up to, and nobody can honestly promise you a place on it.

When someone asks an assistant instead

Some people have stopped working through a list at all. They ask ChatGPT, or the assistant on their phone, who to call for a blocked drain in their town, and they go with the name it gives back. It is not how most work gets found yet. It is also not going away.

The useful part is that there is nothing new to buy here either. Those tools read the same things a person reads: your Google profile, the reviews on it, and a website whose pages say plainly what you do and where you do it. That is one piece of work, not a second product. A profile that is vague about your trade and your area is vague to a person and to an assistant in exactly the same way.
